New study tests HIV drug in newborns to prevent infection

Summary

This study tests the safety and how the body handles the drug cabotegravir in newborns (up to 10 days old) who were exposed to HIV-1. About 44 healthy babies born at full term and weighing at least 2 kg will receive the drug either by mouth or injection. The goal is to find safe doses to help control HIV infection risk in these infants.
