HIIT boosts stroke recovery: new study tests Power-Building workouts
NCT ID NCT06554665
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on a recumbent stepper can improve muscle power in people who have had a stroke. 66 chronic stroke survivors aged 50-80 will be randomly assigned to HIIT, moderate-intensity continuous training, or stretching for 12 weeks. Researchers will measure changes in muscle power, strength, and other functions at several points up to 24 weeks.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) on a recumbent stepper
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a more effective exercise program to help stroke survivors regain muscle power and improve daily function.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 66 participants, so results may not apply to all stroke survivors. The training is intense and may be hard for some to complete.
