Could short bursts of exercise ease stubborn shoulder pain?

NCT ID NCT07275164

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study explores whether high-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a feasible and acceptable option for people with long-term shoulder pain, such as rotator cuff issues or frozen shoulder. Researchers will enroll 15 people with shoulder pain and 15 without, measuring inflammation, blood sugar, and pain sensitivity. Participants with shoulder pain will do one 20-minute HIIT session on a stationary bike. The goal is to see if this approach is practical and safe, and whether it might reduce inflammation linked to persistent pain.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) on a cycle ergometer

What this could lead to

If successful, this could pave the way for larger studies exploring HIIT as a treatment for chronic shoulder pain by targeting inflammation and nervous system function.

What could go wrong

This is a very small feasibility study with only 15 participants, so results may not apply broadly. It is not designed to prove effectiveness, only to see if the approach is practical and acceptable.
