Breakfast breakthrough: two carb types may boost liver fuel for athletes

NCT ID NCT07476989

First seen Mar 22, 2026 · Last updated Apr 30, 2026 · Updated 4 times

Summary

This study looks at whether eating a breakfast with two types of carbohydrates (glucose and fructose) can increase the amount of glycogen stored in the liver. Twelve healthy male athletes will try three different breakfast options—no breakfast, a high-carb breakfast with no fructose, and a high-carb breakfast with half fructose—to see which best restores liver glycogen after an overnight fast. The goal is to find the best way to fuel the liver before exercise, which could improve performance.
