Common cold sore drug investigated to fight Alzheimer's

NCT ID NCT04710030

Summary

This study tested whether a high dose of the antiviral drug valacyclovir, commonly used for herpes, could slow down early memory loss linked to Alzheimer's disease. It involved 50 older adults who had mild memory problems, tested positive for herpes simplex virus, and showed early Alzheimer's biomarkers. Participants took either the drug or a placebo for one year to see if it reduced brain changes and cognitive decline.
