New drug cocktail shows promise in shrinking HER2+ stomach tumors before surgery

NCT ID NCT05034887

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This phase 2 study tests two approaches for HER2-positive stomach or gastroesophageal junction cancer that hasn't spread. One group gets trastuzumab deruxtecan alone before surgery. Another group gets a combination of trastuzumab deruxtecan, capecitabine, and durvalumab both before and after surgery. The main goal is to see how many patients have a major response in their tumor after treatment. The trial involves 64 adults aged 20 and older.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

trastuzumab deruxtecan (T-DXd), capecitabine, durvalumab

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a more effective treatment approach for HER2-positive stomach cancer, potentially improving surgical outcomes and reducing recurrence.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial (64 participants) without a comparison group, so results may not apply broadly. The drug combination also carries risks like lung inflammation or heart problems.
