Simple surgical tweak may ease pain after hemorrhoid surgery

NCT ID NCT07360912

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether adding a small cut to relax the anal muscle during standard hemorrhoid surgery helps reduce pain and bleeding after the operation. 120 adults with advanced hemorrhoids were randomly assigned to get either the standard surgery or the surgery with the extra muscle cut. Researchers measured pain and bleeding over two weeks to see which approach worked better.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Procedure: hemorrhoidectomy with lateral internal sphincterotomy

What this could lead to

If it works, this could lead to a simple surgical adjustment that makes recovery from hemorrhoid surgery less painful and less likely to cause bleeding.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study with 120 patients, so results may not apply to everyone. Adding a muscle cut could also carry risks like incontinence in some people.
