New heart surgery drug aims to slash deadly complication risk

Summary
This study is testing if adding a fast-acting heart medication called landiolol to the protective fluid used during heart surgery can reduce a dangerous condition where the heart pumps too weakly after the operation. It will involve 1,500 adults having planned mitral valve repair or replacement surgery. The goal is to see if this approach lowers the risk of severe low heart output, which can lead to organ failure and death.
