New heart surgery tool aims to zap away dangerous irregular heartbeat
NCT ID NCT03546374
Summary
This study is testing the safety and effectiveness of two handheld surgical devices that use extreme cold or radiofrequency energy to create scar tissue in the heart. The goal is to stop or reduce persistent irregular heartbeats (atrial fibrillation) in patients who are already having open-heart surgery for other reasons, like a valve replacement. About 160 patients will be followed for one year to see if the procedure controls their heart rhythm and improves their quality of life.
