Brain-Training games aim to boost hearing in crowds

NCT ID NCT05145946

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study planned to test whether playing specially designed video games at home could improve the ability of older adults with high-frequency hearing loss to understand speech in noisy environments. Participants would have played either an immersive audiomotor game or an auditory memory game for 3.5 hours per week over 8 weeks. However, the study was withdrawn before any participants were enrolled, so no data were collected.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Video game training (closed-loop audiomotor game and auditory memory game)

What this could lead to

If it had worked, this could point toward a non-drug, game-based way to help older adults hear better in noisy places.

What could go wrong

The study was withdrawn before enrolling anyone, so no results exist. Even if run, it was small and early-stage, so success was uncertain.
