Which hand rub saves more tiny lives? new trial aims to find out
NCT ID NCT07421323
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares two common hand rubs—chlorhexidine and alcohol—used by medical staff before touching premature babies in the NICU. The goal is to see which one better prevents healthcare-associated infections. One hundred premature infants will be monitored with blood cultures at 7, 14, and 28 days after birth.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
chlorhexidine gluconate and alcohol hand rubs
What this could lead to
If this trial shows one hand rub is better, it could lead to simple changes in hand hygiene that reduce infections in vulnerable newborns.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 100 babies, so results may not apply to all hospitals. The outcome depends on staff following the hand rub routine consistently.
