Hand massage may soothe itching for kidney patients on dialysis

NCT ID NCT07312916

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether hand massage can reduce the often severe itching that affects many people on hemodialysis. Fifty-four adults will be randomly assigned to receive either hand massage or verbal attention during dialysis sessions over three months. Researchers will measure changes in itch severity, quality of life, and sleep, and interview some participants about their experience.

What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a safe, non-drug way to ease itching and improve sleep and quality of life for people on dialysis.
