New trial tests virtual reality and electrical zaps to help kids with cerebral palsy use their hands better

NCT ID NCT07311018

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests two new methods to improve hand function in children with cerebral palsy: a virtual reality system called Leap Motion that uses hand-tracking games, and neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) that uses mild electrical pulses to activate muscles. Thirty children aged 6-15 will first receive standard therapy for 4 weeks, then be randomly assigned to either Leap Motion games or NMES for 8 weeks. The goal is to see which approach better helps with everyday hand tasks like picking up objects or stacking checkers.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) and Leap Motion-based virtual reality exercises

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward effective, engaging ways to improve hand function and daily living skills in children with cerebral palsy.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 30 participants. Results may not apply to all children with CP, and the improvements might be modest or not last long-term.
