Thirsty for answers: new study tests if plain water is essential for health

NCT ID NCT07464002

First seen Mar 17, 2026 · Last updated Jun 10, 2026 · Updated 18 times

Summary

This study looks at whether healthy young adults who usually drink less than 1 liter of plain water per day have a suppressed sense of thirst. Over 4 weeks, participants will drink enough water to keep their urine diluted. Researchers will measure changes in thirst, body chemistry, and metabolism to better understand if current water intake guidelines need updating.
