Titanium inserts vs. gum grafts: which fixes 'Black Triangles' better?

NCT ID NCT07401667

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested two methods to rebuild the small triangle of gum between teeth (called the papilla), which can shrink and leave dark gaps. One method used a small titanium screw-like device placed into the bone, and the other used a graft of the patient's own connective tissue. Eighteen healthy adults aged 18-35 with gum loss were randomly assigned to one of the two treatments. The researchers measured gum height and healing over three months to see which approach worked better.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

connective tissue graft (surgical procedure) and titanium papillary insert (dental device)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a new, less invasive option for restoring gum tissue between teeth, improving smile appearance.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early-stage trial with only 18 participants and short follow-up (3 months). Results may not apply to everyone, and both procedures carry surgical risks like infection or graft failure.
