Chewing gum study seeks to uncover jaw fatigue secrets in TMJ sufferers

NCT ID NCT07273123

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at how chewing sugar-free gum for up to 18 minutes affects jaw muscle fatigue in 30 young adults, half with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and half without. Participants chew gum in 3-minute cycles, rating their fatigue and having muscle activity measured. The goal is to see if people with TMJ disorders experience fatigue differently, which could inform future care.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

sugar-free chewing gum

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help understand how chewing affects jaw fatigue in people with TMJ disorders, potentially guiding future treatments or self-care advice.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage observational study with only 30 participants. It measures fatigue during a short chewing task, not long-term outcomes, so results may not apply broadly.
