First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Aug 06, 2026 · Updated 5 times
Summary
This study tests whether group education sessions can help veterans with newly diagnosed cancer discuss their goals of care and complete advance directives. Fifty veterans will attend two virtual or in-person sessions led by a trained health educator. Researchers will check if this approach improves documentation of care preferences and makes veterans feel more heard by their medical team.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- group advance care planning education sessions
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this approach could help veterans feel more heard and understood by their care teams and ensure their treatment wishes are documented.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small pilot study with only 50 participants, so results may not apply to all veterans. The intervention is educational, so it won't directly treat cancer or extend life.
