Healthy donors needed to boost Infection-Fighting cells for vulnerable patients

NCT ID NCT01553214

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study aims to improve the collection of granulocytes (a type of white blood cell) from healthy volunteers. Donors receive filgrastim and dexamethasone to move these cells into the bloodstream, then donate via apheresis. Up to 1,000 donors aged 18-75 can donate up to 12 times per year. The goal is to build a reliable donor registry to meet patient needs at the NIH Clinical Center.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

filgrastim and dexamethasone

What this could lead to

If successful, this could create a reliable donor program to provide granulocyte transfusions for patients with weakened immune systems, helping them fight infections.

What could go wrong

This is a Phase 4 study focused on donor feasibility, not treatment outcomes. Long-term effects of repeated filgrastim and dexamethasone in donors are still being monitored.
