Healthy volunteers sought to donate 'Supercharged' white blood cells to help fight infections in vulnerable patients

NCT ID NCT01553214

Summary

This study aims to improve how infection-fighting white blood cells (called granulocytes) are collected from healthy donors for transfusion to patients with weakened immune systems, such as those undergoing chemotherapy or bone marrow transplants. Researchers will recruit up to 1,000 healthy volunteers to donate these cells up to 12 times a year, using two medications to help move more cells into the bloodstream for collection. The main goals are to establish a reliable donor program and monitor the short- and long-term effects of the donation process on the volunteers themselves.
