Blood swap trial aims to fuel starved brains

NCT ID NCT04137692

Summary

This study is testing whether replacing a person's red blood cells with healthy donor cells can help treat GLUT1 deficiency syndrome, a rare disorder where the brain doesn't get enough energy from sugar. Researchers will enroll 12 participants aged 16-80 who have this genetic condition and see if the procedure reduces seizures and improves brain activity. The goal is to find a better treatment option than the current ketogenic diet, which is often poorly tolerated.
