Timing of orthodontic gap closure may influence gum health
NCT ID NCT07210762
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether starting to close the gap left by a tooth extraction early (1 week after) or later (8 weeks after) changes the chance of developing a gum cleft. Nineteen orthodontic patients will have one side of their mouth assigned to early closure and the other to delayed closure. The goal is to see which timing leads to fewer gum clefts, helping dentists make better treatment decisions.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help orthodontists choose the best time to close gaps after tooth extraction to reduce the risk of gum clefts.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 19 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. It is observational in nature and does not test a new treatment.
