Gene therapy injected into eye aims to halt inherited blindness

NCT ID NCT03328130

Summary

This study tested a gene therapy for people with a specific genetic form of retinitis pigmentosa, a disease that causes progressive vision loss and can lead to blindness. Doctors injected a modified virus carrying a healthy gene directly into the retina of the eye, hoping to correct the genetic defect and slow or stop vision loss. The trial was terminated and enrolled 19 participants aged 13 and older to assess safety and see if the treatment improved vision.
