New supplement trial offers hope for rare brain disorder

NCT ID NCT07432490

Summary

This study is testing whether a dietary supplement called L-fucose can help control symptoms of GLUT1 Deficiency Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects brain energy and causes movement problems. Sixteen adults with confirmed GLUT1DS will take either the supplement or a placebo for a period, then switch, to see if fucose improves their coordination, speech, seizures, and quality of life. The main goal is to see if the supplement is safe and can reduce the severity of ataxia, a key symptom involving unsteady movement.
