Thigh ultrasound may predict frailty in elderly ICU patients

NCT ID NCT07310667

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at whether measuring the thickness of the front thigh muscle with ultrasound can help identify frailty and malnutrition in critically ill patients over 65. Researchers will assess 80 patients within 24 hours of ICU admission and again on days 3 and 7. The goal is to find a simple, bedside tool to guide nutrition and care without the risks of CT scans.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could show that a simple bedside ultrasound can help identify frail patients in the ICU, leading to better nutritional care.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early observational study with only 80 patients. It does not test a treatment, so it cannot directly improve outcomes.
