Can a phone app help people face cockroach fears from home?
NCT ID NCT07813364
First seen Sep 10, 2026 · Last updated Sep 11, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
Researchers are testing a smartphone app called FobiApp that uses augmented reality to guide people through exposure therapy for cockroach phobia. Adults with a diagnosed cockroach phobia use the app at home, working through increasingly difficult levels that show virtual cockroaches. The study compares the app alone with the app plus attention bias modification training, and measures usability, satisfaction, and changes in avoidance behavior.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- a smartphone app that delivers self-guided augmented reality exposure therapy, with or without attention bias modification training
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a convenient, low-cost way for people with animal phobias to get exposure therapy from home instead of waiting for in-person care.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small feasibility study of 40 people, so it cannot prove the app works. Self-guided exposure may be hard to stick with, and results in cockroach phobia may not apply to other fears.
