New RNA tool may reveal best heated chemo for rare abdominal cancer

NCT ID NCT06839378

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This completed study tested a new method to see how well two different heated chemotherapy regimens work against pseudomyxoma peritonei, a rare abdominal cancer. Researchers injected a special form of chemotherapy (5-FU) before surgery to label newly made RNA in tumor cells. After surgery, patients received either cisplatin alone or cisplatin plus docetaxel as heated chemotherapy. By comparing RNA changes in tumor samples before and after treatment, the study aimed to identify which regimen affects cancer cells more. The 36 participants were adults aged 18-75 with confirmed disease who were eligible for surgery and heated chemotherapy.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

5-fluorouracil, cisplatin, docetaxel

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors choose the most effective heated chemotherapy regimen for pseudomyxoma peritonei and identify new treatment targets.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early-stage study (36 people) that only looks at RNA changes, not patient outcomes like survival. The results may not translate into better treatments.
