Can fluoride stop root cavities in seniors? new trial aims to find out
NCT ID NCT05765058
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether different fluoride treatments—like varnishes, solutions, and mousse—can stop root cavities from getting worse in adults over 44. About 136 participants in Switzerland will use these products at home or get them applied by a dentist twice a year. The goal is to find a simple, non-surgical way to manage root cavities in older people.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
fluoride (silver diamine fluoride, sodium fluoride varnish, fluoridated toothpaste, fluoridated tooth mousse)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that simple fluoride treatments applied at home or by a dentist can stop root cavities from getting worse in older adults.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial (136 people) that hasn't started yet. Results may not apply to everyone, and some treatments may not work better than placebo.
