New scanner aims to cut repeat breast cancer surgeries

NCT ID NCT07352930

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 30, 2026 · Updated 3 times

Summary

This trial tests a new device called the EndoSCell Scanner, which uses fluorescence imaging to help surgeons see if any cancer cells remain after removing a breast tumor. About 172 women with breast cancer will have their surgical cavity scanned during surgery. If the scanner detects possible leftover cancer, the surgeon can remove more tissue right away. The goal is to lower the chance of needing a second surgery to clear remaining cancer.

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

EndoSCell Scanner (ES Scanner) device

What this could lead to

If successful, this device could help surgeons remove all cancer cells during breast-conserving surgery, reducing the need for a second operation.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage trial with only 172 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The device's accuracy in detecting cancer cells is still being tested.
