Neck vein guide may cut surgery risks

NCT ID NCT07041021

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests a new way to manage fluids during abdominal surgery by watching how the internal jugular vein in the neck changes with breathing. 84 adults having abdominal surgery will be randomly assigned to either standard fluid care or care guided by this vein measurement. The goal is to see if this approach lowers the chance of complications like infections, heart issues, or kidney problems after surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Respiratory variation of the Internal Jugular Vein (diagnostic test)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a simple, non-invasive way to guide fluid management during abdominal surgery, potentially reducing complications and hospital stays.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial (84 participants) testing a monitoring technique, not a treatment. The approach may not reduce complications or may be difficult to apply broadly.
