New ultrasound test could prevent fluid overload in sick kids on ventilators
NCT ID NCT07494643
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study looks at whether a simple heart ultrasound test can tell doctors if a child with shock needs more IV fluids. It involves 60 children in intensive care who are on ventilators with low air volumes. The test measures changes in blood flow speed in the aorta during breathing. If accurate, it could help avoid giving unnecessary fluids that may cause harm.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could give doctors a reliable, non-invasive way to decide which critically ill children need fluids, reducing unnecessary fluid overload.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early diagnostic study (60 children) that only tests accuracy, not outcomes. The measure may not work well enough in real-world settings.
