Fish oil infusion before heart surgery may cut dangerous heart rhythm risk

NCT ID NCT06279793

First seen Feb 24, 2026 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 9 times

Summary

This study tests whether giving fish oil through a vein before heart surgery can prevent a common complication called atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat) and help patients recover faster. About 550 high-risk adults having elective heart surgery will receive either fish oil or a placebo (salt water) alongside standard care. The goal is to see if fish oil reduces heart rhythm problems and shortens time on a breathing machine.
