New therapy aims to ease parents' fear of cancer returning

NCT ID NCT06872840

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

Many parents of childhood cancer survivors struggle with intense fear that their child's cancer will come back. This study tests a 7-session group therapy program, adapted from one used for adult survivors, to see if it is acceptable and helpful for parents. Thirty-six parents in Canada will be randomly assigned to start the program right away or wait three months. The study will measure changes in fear and quality of life.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Parent Fear of Recurrence Therapy (Parent-FORT) - a 7-session group therapy program
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a new, evidence-based way to help parents of childhood cancer survivors cope with fear of cancer recurrence and improve their quality of life.
What could go wrong
This is a very small pilot study with only 36 participants, so results may not apply to all parents. The therapy is new and untested in this group, so it may not reduce fear as hoped.
