Scientists probe Placenta's role in protecting premature Babies' eyesight

NCT ID NCT04819893

Summary

This study aims to understand how certain fats (omega-3 fatty acids) and how the placenta processes them might be connected to an eye disease called retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in very premature babies. Researchers will compare mothers who give birth very early (before 29 weeks) with mothers who give birth at full term, measuring levels of fatty acid receptors in the placenta. The goal is to gather knowledge about the biological mechanisms behind ROP, not to test a treatment.
