Can breast cancer surgery be done without general anesthesia? researchers test nerve blocks plus hypnosis
NCT ID NCT07877740
First seen Oct 16, 2026 · Last updated Oct 16, 2026
Summary
Researchers at a Swiss hospital are studying whether a standardized locoregional anesthesia protocol can carry patients through breast cancer surgery without converting to general anesthesia. The protocol uses predefined ultrasound-guided fascial plane blocks, paired with either procedural sedation or adjunctive hypnosis. About 65 adults scheduled for elective unilateral breast cancer surgery will receive the protocol as part of routine care. The team will track how often surgery finishes without general anesthesia, along with patient acceptance, protocol adherence, induction time, satisfaction, and complications.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- A standardized locoregional anesthesia protocol using ultrasound-guided fascial plane blocks, combined with procedural sedation or adjunctive hypnosis
- What this could lead to
- If the protocol proves workable, it could offer a way to perform breast cancer surgery without general anesthesia, which may suit patients who want to avoid it or cannot tolerate it.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small observational study at one hospital, so results may not carry over to other centers or surgeons. Some participants may still need conversion to general anesthesia, and the approach depends on operator skill and patient cooperation.
