New bedside tool could cut unnecessary brain scans in seniors after falls
NCT ID NCT07536906
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing a simple bedside tool called the Falls Decision Rule to help emergency doctors decide whether older adults (65+) need a brain scan after a fall. Researchers will check if the tool accurately identifies who has a serious brain bleed and who does not. The goal is to avoid unnecessary scans while still catching dangerous injuries. The study will enroll 4,000 participants across multiple emergency departments.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If the tool works, it could help emergency doctors quickly decide who needs a brain scan after a fall, reducing unnecessary scans and speeding up care.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. The tool may not be accurate enough in real-world settings, and results may not apply to all older adults.
