New face mask technique may fix underbite without surgery

NCT ID NCT07279662

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested two ways to pull the upper jaw forward in 40 children aged 7-13 with underbite. One method used a traditional face mask attached to teeth, the other used tiny screws placed in the cheekbone. Both followed a special expansion protocol. The goal was to see which approach moves the upper jaw more effectively with fewer unwanted tooth movements.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

skeletal anchorage (miniscrews) and conventional tooth-borne face mask

What this could lead to

If skeletal anchorage proves superior, it could become a preferred method for correcting underbite in growing children, reducing the need for jaw surgery later.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study with only 40 participants. Results may not apply to all cases, and the procedure involves minor surgery to place miniscrews.
