Simple sleep aids may cut delirium after heart surgery
NCT ID NCT06752980
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether wearing eye masks and/or earplugs at night can improve sleep quality and reduce delirium in 128 patients recovering from coronary artery bypass surgery. Participants will be randomly assigned to use these aids on the first three nights after surgery. Researchers will measure sleep using a standard scale and check for signs of delirium. If effective, this low-cost approach could help patients recover more smoothly.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
eye mask and earplugs
What this could lead to
If it works, this simple, low-cost approach could improve sleep and reduce delirium after heart surgery, leading to faster recovery and shorter hospital stays.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study (128 participants) testing a non-drug intervention. Results may not apply to all patients, and the effect on delirium may be modest or absent.
