Band workouts and breathing drills may boost lung health in seniors

NCT ID NCT07612072

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether elastic-band resistance training, with or without breathing exercises, can improve lung function and physical abilities in older adults with mild breathing problems. Seventy-five people aged 60 to 85 will be randomly assigned to one of three groups: resistance training plus breathing exercises, resistance training alone, or usual health advice. The program lasts 12 weeks, with supervised sessions three times a week. Researchers will measure lung function, leg strength, walking speed, and exercise tolerance at the start, at 6 weeks, and at 12 weeks.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

elastic-band resistance training and breathing training

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a simple, low-cost exercise program to help older adults breathe better and stay active.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 75 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The exercises are generally safe, but some participants may find them too challenging.
