New endoscopic drainage may spare elderly patients from gallbladder surgery

NCT ID NCT07678541

First seen Jul 01, 2026 · Last updated Jul 02, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two treatments for acute cholecystitis (inflamed gallbladder) in patients aged 75 and older. One is the standard laparoscopic surgery to remove the gallbladder. The other is a newer, less invasive procedure called EUS-guided gallbladder drainage, where a small tube is placed through the stomach or intestine to drain the gallbladder. The goal is to see if the drainage procedure works as well as surgery, with fewer risks for older patients who may have other health problems.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
endoscopic ultrasound-guided gallbladder drainage (EUS-GBD) with lumen-apposing metal stent
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a safer, less invasive alternative to surgery for elderly patients with acute cholecystitis, reducing recovery time and complications.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, early-stage trial. The endoscopic procedure may have higher recurrence rates or its own complications, and results may not apply to all elderly patients.
