Heart surgery breathing tube trick may prevent throat swelling

NCT ID NCT07148024

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 17, 2026 · Updated 35 times

Summary

This study looked at 76 adults having planned heart bypass surgery to see if changing the pressure in the breathing tube's cuff during the procedure could reduce swelling in the airway. Participants were split into two groups: one with the cuff pressure set to zero during the heart-lung machine phase, and the other with standard pressure. The researchers used ultrasound to measure throat tissue thickness at several times before, during, and after surgery. The goal was to find out which cuff pressure strategy is safer and leads to less airway swelling.
