New epidural timing could cut breakthrough pain in labor for experienced moms

NCT ID NCT06580327

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether giving epidural pain medicine in programmed, hourly boluses (instead of a continuous drip) reduces sudden breakthrough pain during labor. About 186 women who have given birth before will be randomly assigned to one of the two methods. The goal is to see which approach keeps pain scores lower and reduces the need for extra pain relief.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
bupivacaine and fentanyl (epidural)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could lead to a more effective way to manage labor pain for women who have given birth before, reducing sudden breakthrough pain.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with 186 participants, so results may not apply to all women. The difference between the two methods may be small or not clinically meaningful.
