New ICU test aims to prevent dangerous breathing tube reinsertions

NCT ID NCT06450678

Summary

This study is testing a new checklist, called the EPIC Assessment, to help doctors decide when it's safe to take a patient off a ventilator (breathing machine). Specially trained physiotherapists will perform the assessment on 330 ICU patients who are ready to try breathing on their own. The goal is to see if this combined assessment is more reliable at predicting who will succeed, to avoid the risks of putting the breathing tube back in.
