New spray could quench thirst for ICU patients on ventilators

NCT ID NCT07533552

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether an enzyme-based mouth spray can better relieve intense thirst in ICU patients who have a breathing tube, compared to a distilled water spray. Thirst is very common in these patients and can cause anxiety or complications. The trial involves 76 adults in Taiwan, who will receive either the enzyme spray or water spray after routine mouth care, and their thirst will be measured over four hours.
