Gene therapy shot aims to ease diabetic foot pain

NCT ID NCT01475786

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested a gene therapy called Engensis (VM202) to see if it safely reduces pain in people with diabetic peripheral neuropathy. 104 adults with type 1 or 2 diabetes and leg pain for at least 6 months received either low-dose, high-dose, or placebo injections into their calves. The main goal was to measure changes in average daily pain over 6 months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Engensis (VM202) gene therapy

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a new way to reduce chronic pain in people with diabetic nerve damage.

What could go wrong

This is an early phase 2 trial with only 104 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The treatment involves injections into the calves and may not work better than placebo.
