Shock therapy for seniors? tiny study tests EMS + workout for menopause muscle loss
NCT ID NCT07628790
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This pilot study tests whether adding lower-body electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) to resistance training is feasible and helpful for inactive postmenopausal women aged 50-70. Sixteen women will do 12 exercise sessions over 6 weeks, with half also receiving EMS. Researchers will check if the combo improves muscle mass, strength, artery health, and heart rate control. The main goal is to see if a larger trial is possible.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Electrical muscle stimulation device combined with resistance training
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple way to help postmenopausal women maintain muscle strength and heart health without extra effort.
What could go wrong
This is a very small pilot study with only 16 people, so results may not apply widely. The added benefit of EMS over exercise alone is uncertain.
