New electronic syringe aims to make dental shots less painful

NCT ID NCT07257432

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether an electronic syringe (Smartject) causes less pain during injection and provides longer numbing than a traditional syringe. Thirty adults received numbing shots on both sides of their mouth, one with each device. Researchers measured how quickly numbness started and how much pain people felt.

Active substance

lidocaine

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a less painful way to deliver local anesthesia for dental work.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early study with only 30 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The benefit over traditional methods may be minimal.
