New EHR tool aims to cut parent dosing errors in half
NCT ID NCT05146388
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether an automated system built into electronic health records could improve how pharmacists label and dispense liquid medicines for children. The goal was to reduce parent dosing errors by encouraging metric-only (mL) labels and providing the right dosing tool (like a syringe). Researchers studied 500 English- and Spanish-speaking parents of children prescribed liquid medications at two New York hospitals.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
EHR-based intervention (automated instructions to pharmacists)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to fewer dosing mistakes by parents, especially those with low health literacy or limited English.
What could go wrong
This is a completed pre/post study, not a randomized trial, so results may not be widely generalizable. The intervention depends on pharmacist compliance.
