Recycling bypass blood may cut transfusions in heart surgery

NCT ID NCT06824753

First seen Nov 17, 2025 · Last updated Jun 16, 2026 · Updated 29 times

Summary

This study looked at whether giving patients the blood left in the heart-lung machine after coronary bypass surgery could reduce their need for donated blood transfusions. Sixty adults having elective bypass surgery were split into two groups: one received the leftover pump blood, the other did not. Researchers tracked bleeding, clotting, and transfusion needs for a week after surgery to see if the approach was safe and effective.
