Eye ultrasound may help monitor brain pressure during keyhole hysterectomy
NCT ID NCT06168578
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at whether a lung-opening technique called alveolar recruitment manoeuvre (ARM) affects brain pressure during laparoscopic hysterectomy. Researchers will use ultrasound to measure the optic nerve sheath diameter, a noninvasive way to estimate intracranial pressure. The study involves 60 women aged 18-65 undergoing elective surgery. The goal is to understand how ARM influences brain pressure, not to test a new treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that a simple ultrasound measurement of the optic nerve sheath can safely monitor brain pressure during laparoscopic surgery, potentially improving patient safety.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage observational study with only 60 participants. It does not test a treatment, and the findings may not apply to other surgeries or patient groups.
