Heart support breakthrough? balloon pump test aims to save lives on life support

Summary

This study tests if adding a small balloon pump (IABP) to a major heart-lung support machine (VA ECMO) helps patients with severe heart failure recover enough to be safely taken off the machine. It will involve 430 adults in cardiogenic shock who are on this advanced life support. The main goal is to see if the combined therapy improves survival and successful weaning from support compared to using the heart-lung machine alone.
